Hi, it's Mahj. This page explains what information we collect when you visit dearmahj.com, sign up for my emails, or buy something from us; what we do with it; and what you can do about it. The short version: we collect what we need to send you what you asked for, we never sell it, and you can leave any time.
"We," "us," and "Dear Mahj" mean Dear Mahj LLC, a Kansas limited liability company, which runs this site. This policy applies to dearmahj.com and to the emails we send. It does not cover Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or any other site we link to; those have their own policies.
What we collect
When you sign up for the Tile Guide or my emails: your first name and email address. That's all the form asks for.
When you buy something: your name, email address, and billing information. Payments are processed by our checkout provider; we never see or store your full card number.
When you email us: whatever you choose to include, so we can answer you.
When you visit the site: like most websites, ours uses cookies and similar tools to see how the site is used (which pages are visited, roughly where visitors are from, what device and browser they use). This helps us make the site work better. You can accept or decline these cookies in the banner on your first visit, and you can change your mind in your browser settings. Some cookies are required for the site to function (for example, to keep you signed in to the course); those can't be switched off.
We don't knowingly collect sensitive personal information, and we ask you not to send us any.
How we use it
To send you the Tile Guide and the emails you signed up for, including news about the course and, later, about Dear Mahj membership.
To deliver what you buy, give you access to it, and support you while you use it.
To answer your questions.
To understand how people use the site so we can improve it.
To keep the site and your account secure, and to meet our legal obligations.
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it with anyone for their own marketing.
Who helps us
A few companies handle things behind the scenes. Your information passes through them only so they can do their job for us, and they're not allowed to use it for anything else:
Kit sends our emails and stores our subscriber list.
Squarespace hosts the website, runs the checkout, and provides site analytics.
Google provides our email account (mahj@dearmahj.com).
Our payment processor (through Squarespace) handles card payments.
Each of them has its own privacy policy. Some of them store data on servers outside your country; by using the site you understand that your information may be processed in the United States.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our customers, or the public.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you're a subscriber or customer, and for as long as we need it afterward to keep our records straight (for example, purchase records we're required to keep for tax purposes). If you unsubscribe, Kit keeps a note of your address only so we don't accidentally email you again.
Your choices and rights
Unsubscribe any time. Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you're off the list.
See, correct, or delete your information. Email mahj@dearmahj.com and we'll take care of it, usually within a few days. We may ask you to confirm it's really you.
Cookies. Decline them in the banner, or clear them in your browser.
If you live in California (or another US state with a privacy law), you have the right to know what personal information we have about you, to ask us to delete it, to correct it, and not to be discriminated against for asking. We don't sell or share your personal information as those laws define it. To exercise any of these rights, email us.
If you live in the UK or European Union, you have similar rights under the GDPR, including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your data, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Our basis for emailing you is your consent, which you can withdraw by unsubscribing; our basis for fulfilling a purchase is our contract with you.
Do Not Track. Our site doesn't respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals, because there's no agreed standard for them. The cookie banner is how you tell us no.
Security
We use reputable providers, encrypted connections (the padlock in your browser), and limited access to keep your information safe. No system is perfect, so please keep your course login private and let us know if you think something's wrong.
Children
Dear Mahj is for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you think a child has given us their details, email us and we'll delete them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. Anything significant, we'll say so in an email.
